A DISCOUNT card similar to that enjoyed by senior citizens should be made available to the carers of disabled or frail people, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said in Newcastle yesterday.

The card, which would offer transport concessions and discounts on goods and services, would go some way to easing the financial burden on carers, she said.

Ms Rhiannon made the announcement while touring the city yesterday with Greens candidate for Newcastle Michael Osborne, who estimated that Newcastle had several thousand full-time carers who received little or no help from the State Government.

'The thousands of people caring for the elderly, people with a disability, mental illness or chronic health problem rely on important social welfare organisations," he said.
