Choosing an online merchant credit card services provider

1 July 2008

A merchant account gives your online business the ability to securely process credit card services and possibly debit card services. With more people shopping online these days, credit cards are being used by online shops.

You will need to make sure your customers are in a secure online shopping environment. As an online merchant, you will need to provide:

  • An internet specific merchant account
  • A payment gateway service - this connects your online shop to your merchant account provider.
  • A SSL certificate - you must make sure that your customer's credit card details are protected.

There are various costs involved with providing credit card services. Sign up fees, card services fees, and possible commission fees.

Shop around and confirm that your bank is offering you the best deal on credit card services. Questions to ask your bank could include:

  • What fees are involved?
  • Which credit cards will be accepted?
  • Will different currencies be accepted?
  • How are disputed transactions handled?
  • What level of customer service is provided?
